Owner's Description

The representative note is the smallest denomination from the new 1967 Banco Central del Uruguay issue – 50 pesos, P46a. The front of the note shows General Jose Gervasio Artigas (1764-1850), considered a national hero in Uruguay, given the pivotal military and political roles he played in gaining independence from the Spanish and Portuguese. The back is another representation of independence and depicts ‘The Oath of the thirty-three Orientales’ a painting by Juan Manuel Blanes where, in 1825, exiled Uruguayan fighters planted a flag on the eastern bank of the Plata River and took an oath to free Uruguay from Brazilian control and is commemorated as Patriots Day, a national holiday on April 19th. There are a number of signature varieties known for this note and in this case the signatories are Jose Gil Diaz (President), William W. Rosso (General co-manager) and Juan Cesar Pacchiotti (General Secretary).
