Owner's Description

Cherry picked at a coin shop in Austin, TX. this note that was issued in Hempstead, Texas may have spent it's entire life in Texas after issuance. Hempstead is oddly enough where my family initially set roots in after coming to Texas in the 1800's. Perhaps a family member circulated this note. These notes are very inexpensive...when the issue was east of the Mississippi. I was pleasantly surprised to see only two examples of this particular Hempstead issue in Heritage records and they fetched a premium well above the amount usually associated with a T-40. Hempstead, located in east Texas, was the site of several training and prisoner of war camps during the Civil War. In March, 1865, 8,000 CSA troops were sent to Hempstead to await the arrival of President Jefferson Davis in preparation for carrying on the struggle. The end of the war and Davis' capture made this last stand attempt moot.
