This newly issued 1000 Cordobas banknote was released into circulation on the 2nd of January 2017, just a month after the limited edition commemorative issue (P216). This marks the return of the 1000 Cordoba banknote after a 30 year absence in Nicaragua after the inflationary 1980s when the Old Cordoba was replaced with the New Cordoba Oro in 1990 with a lower exchange rate. There was a 500 and 1000 Cordoba banknote produced for the 1990s set however this was never released to the public and only two known examples were issued officially. These were released to reduce the amount of banknotes required for larger transactions, as the Cordoba Oro had devalued considerably from when it was initially introduced in the early 1990s. 1000 Cordobas in US Dollar value in 2016 was roughly U$35.
There are two variations the regular issue notes with an A prefix, and the Replacement notes such as this one with an R prefix.
The obverse of the banknote features Hacienda San Jacinto a farm located in the municipality of Tipitapa about 30 mins away from the capital of Managua. This farm was home to the battle of San Jacinto which took place on the 14th of September 1856. This scene was first depicted on the Series C 10 Cordobas banknote from 1972. Later it was featured on both the series A & B 2002 & 2006 500 Cordobas banknotes. The same Hacienda was also featured on the short lived emergency issue notes of 1989-90 on the 50,000 Cordobas and 10 million Cordobas with a slightly different design.
The reverse of the banknotes feature the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception (Castillo Inmaculada Concepcion). This fortress is a World Heritage listed site that was originally constructed in 1675 along the banks of the San Juan River in El Castillo in Southern Nicaragua. The purpose of this fort was to protect the city of Granada from Pirate attacks. A scene depicting the Fortress is also present on the reverse of the 50 Cordobas banknotes from series A & B from 2002 & 2006.
The banknote is paper based and it is to complement the 2015 release of mainly polymer banknotes (only the 500 Cordobas is also paper), its dimensions are 161 x 67 mm being slightly larger (5mm) than the 500 Cordobas banknote. This same design is used for the new 2019 polymer release.
As of October 2020 there was only a total of 2 of these replacement notes that have been certified, both in EPQ 66. In the normal emission there was a total of 11 notes graded from 64 EPQ through to 67 EPQ.

This latest commemorative issue from Nicaragua was released in Polymer for the 60th Anniversary of the Central Bank. It marks the return to a 5 Cordoba note which hadn't been seen since the 1995 issue. The currency had deflated considerably since then and the face value of this note is roughly 15 US cents. Unlike other modern issues there is no known replacement notes for this note.
