Walking Dead Image First 3/10 Image Firsts: Walking Dead 1 9.8 Image Firsts Edition 3/10

The story opens with Officer Rick Grimes and his partner, Shane, in a standoff with a criminal that has escaped from prison. As Rick attempts to flank the criminal, he is shot.

It immediately cuts to Rick in a hospital bed waking up. With no nurses or doctors around, he slowly makes his way out of the room to discover that the hospital is overrun by zombies. He is attacked, but able to get away unscratched. He attempts to find some means of transportation and, only finding a bicycle, rides to his home which has been ransacked and deserted. Upon exiting, he is hit over the head with a shovel by Duane Jones, and knocked unconscious. Duane's father, Morgan Jones, comes running up and scolds the young boy, telling him that Rick is alive and not a zombie.

Rick wakes up in the Jones' residence and, after having dinner, Rick and Morgan explain their situations. Rick reveals how he was shot, put in a coma, and doesn't know what is going on. Morgan tells Rick that not much is known about what caused the outbreak, but that the media was informing everyone to relocate to large cities so that everyone could be protected. Morgan decided to take his chances in a small town, and says the power has since gone out and he knows nothing else. Rick mentions his wife had family in Atlanta and that she may have gone there with their son.

After talking, Rick, Morgan, and Duane go to the police station where Rick works. Rick equips himself with guns and a car. He also gives Morgan some guns and a car. Morgan and Duane plan on staying in the small town, so Rick and Morgan wish each other well and Rick mentions he will come back later for the two. Before Rick leaves for Atlanta, he walks over to a zombified Hannah and shoots her in the head.

Walking Dead 97 Something to Fear Connecting Cover Walking Dead 97 9.8 Second Printing

The Alexandria Safe-Zone citizens are all gathered in the church while Fr. Gabriel Stokes prays for the survivors with Paul Monroe, asking God to watch over Rick, Michonne, Andrea, Glenn, and Carl and to provide them with a safe return.

Maggie starts to feel guilty over Carl, as she was told to look after him. She suddenly starts feeling ill, but says that she visited Denise and confirmed that it is just a regular stomach ache.

Abraham goes to see Eugene, who wasn't in the church's praying session. He informs Eugene that Rick and the others should be back tomorrow, and asks how Rosita is doing. Eugene informs him that she is fine and doing better with Eugene than with him. Abraham leaves, and Rosita appears, telling Eugene that they're not together.

Abraham approaches Heath, who is standing guard at the gate. Abraham asks Heath about the current situation outside of the Safe-Zone. Heath informs Abraham that nothing has really happened except a few zombies have wandered into the ditches that the residents dug after the attack. He also informs Abraham that he will go out later and kill the zombies in the ditches. Heath then tells Abraham that Rick, Michonne, Andrea, Glenn, and Carl will be back soon and Abraham replies, saying that he hopes so.

In the meantime, Rick and the rest of the group are in a van, back on their way to the Alexandria Safe-Zone. In the van, Rick seems to be in a optimistic state, saying he believes that there could be an end to the amount of walkers some day and that it is time to get proactive. He sees that the Hilltop Colony could be the way to regain some sort of normal life. All of the sudden, the sound of a motorcycle is heard.

Rick's party is confronted by a small band of men on motorcycles, wielding rifles and demanding all of their supplies in the van in the name of "Negan". Rick refuses, surmising that the man addressing him is "Negan", but all of the men claim to be "Negan". In the ensuing fight, all of the men are killed but one, who is told that Rick's party, will be protecting Hilltop from now on. Rick further demands half of Negan's supplies as tribute, and sends him away. Carl, having watched the encounter, begins to remember details from before, specifically the incident with Abraham where he was nearly raped. Rick's group then leaves as the walkers approach to devour the gang.

Back at the Alexandria Safe-Zone, Heath notes a higher rate of decay among the walkers as Rick's party returns. Everyone is happily reunited and Maggie reveals to Glenn that she is pregnant. After Rick gathers his thoughts for a presentation to the citizens of the Safe-Zone, he details their experience within the Hilltop community. His plan notes that the Alexandria community doesn't have much to offer except protection, and that he has offered that service in exchange for supplies from Hilltop. No one disagrees.

Later, in private, Andrea confronts Rick about their shared kiss, and both express optimism about their prospects in the world.

Eugene and Abraham leave the Safe-Zone early the next morning without informing anyone. There is still tension between them, but Eugene is confident in the importance of their mission and their safety due to Abraham's presence. As they walk past an alley, several men watch silently while brandishing weapons.

Soon after Issue 97, Eugene and Abraham are still seen talking about Rosita, and Abraham talks about how he wants her to be happy with Eugene. Immediately after, Abraham is shot with an arrow through his head, killing him. In shock, Eugene screams, grabs Abraham's gun, and runs back to the Alexandria Safe-Zone. An arrow is shot at Eugene, but misses the mark. He is then stopped and captured by a small group of Saviors. The leader of this group is revealed to be Abraham's killer, Dwight.

Back in the Safe-Zone, Carl opens the door on a sleeping Andrea and Rick, who are just waking up. Shots are heard by the three, and Rick tells Carl to stay in the house while Rick goes to investigate where exactly the shot came from and why.

Outside the Safe-Zone, Eugene is still being held hostage by the Saviors. Dwight is demanding Rick let his group inside the Safe-Zone. Soon after, Eugene bites Dwight's crotch, sending the scarred man into severe pain. Dwight orders the men to shoot and kill the Alexandria Safe-Zone citizens. Right after, Rick fires off a shot to help Eugene get free. Andrea orders the others to line up on the fence and pick off the remaining Saviors off. Many of the Saviors are killed. With Dwight and the other Saviors retreating away from the Safe-Zone, Rick tells everyone to follow them so they do not regroup. Rick and Andrea discover Abraham's body, and take the corpse back inside to bury it. Holly is shocked to see Abraham's body and begins to mourn. Andrea asks Rick what they will do next. Rick replies that he does not know.

Glenn, Heath and Nicholas are seen fighting zombies behind the Alexandria Safe-Zone's car barrier.

Andrea walks into Rick's home and they discuss the situation with The Saviors. Carl walks in on Rick and Andrea embracing, without them knowing, and then backs out of the room, smiling.

Glenn tells Maggie about how he wants to leave the Alexandria Safe-Zone and move to the Hilltop Colony. Maggie tells Sophia to leave the kitchen so they can further discuss the topic. Glenn explains that it is much safer for the baby that Maggie is having. Maggie shouts at Glenn but they eventually hug, Maggie stating that she doesn't know if that's the right decision.

The citizens of the Alexandria Safe-Zone later mourn for Abraham Ford as a funeral is held in the church.

Rick, as well as many other survivors prepare to depart the Safe Zone and travel to the Hilltop Colony. Rick tells Andrea to stay and guard the Alexandria Safe-Zone, as she is the only one he thinks can manage the task.

After Rick informs Andrea that she has to stay behind and protect the survivors, a band containing Rick, Carl, Michonne, Heath, Glenn, Maggie, and Sophia leave the Safe-Zone and trek toward the Hilltop Colony. As they pass a building, three Saviors are seen on the roof saying, "We attack at dawn".

The three Saviors that were seen in Issue 99 are complaining about the plan to attack the Alexandria Safe-Zone at dawn. One of them says that he is going to head for an unknown man by the name of Paul, whose group is farthest away.

The Alexandria Safe-Zone citizens are seen praying for their lives. Spencer approaches Andrea while she is keeping watch on top of the wall. Andrea is reluctant to talk to him when he starts to mention her and Rick, possibly thinking he's going to act jealous, but he instead reveals that he's happy for her and Rick.

Eugene is seen mourning over Abraham's grave, while Gabriel is in the church, praying. Aaron and Eric prepare for the Saviors, taking an inventory of the Safe-Zone's guns and ammunition.

While on the road, Michonne states that the group will not make it to the Hilltop Colony in time. Glenn is still optimistic about it but they stop the van for the night.

Michonne and Rick are talking nearby at the van. Rick thanks Michonne for everything, and says they'll have to be on the road by dawn. Rick says goodbye to Glenn, and states that he is happy for him. Rick then begins his shift of standing guard. Negan, with fifty other Saviors, sneak up on the group and subdue a sleepy Rick by surprise.

The Saviors line up the survivors from the van (Rick, Carl, Glenn, Maggie, Sophia, Michonne, and Heath) on their knees before Negan. Negan informs the group that he wants revenge for the dead Saviors that Rick and his people killed. Negan then dictates the terms for the group's survival; everything in the Alexandria Safe Zone now belongs to the Saviors. Negan further states that there is a new world order and that Rick and his people now follow Negan - or die.

Negan then tells Rick that he is going to kill one of the group to show Rick's people that he is in charge. Negan introduces his weapon of choice for the execution: Lucille - a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. After a long narrative from Negan about who should be killed with Lucille, Negan randomly picks Glenn as his victim. Maggie panics, as Glenn begs Negan not to kill him. Rick and the others remain silent and watch in horror and cry with bowed heads as Negan smashes Glenn's head in with Lucille. The first blow fractures Glenn's skull and pops out an eye. Everyone cries, looking horrified and angry at Negan. Negan then taunts the still conscious Glenn who reaches out and calls for Maggie. Negan then repeatedly smashes Lucille into Glenn's head, leaving a mass of broken bone, smashed brains, and spattered blood.

Negan informs Rick and his group that the Saviors will be back in one week to collect half of everything in their community. He turns around, leaving the survivors with Glenn's mangled corpse.

In the aftermath of the murderous events of Walking Dead's monumental 100th issue, a furious, grief-stricken Maggie lashes out, punching Rick Grimes repeatedly and calling him a coward. Carl intervenes, pulling a gun on Maggie and commanding her to stop hitting his father. Sophia bites and tackles Carl to stop him from aiming at her "mother". Heath and Michonne separate Sophia and Carl. Heath, Rick, and Maggie then wrap Glenn's body up in a blanket and place him in the back of their van.

While the group continues on to the Hilltop Colony, Maggie announces her intentions that she and Sophia will seek to live there. They arrive at the Hilltop, where Kal and Eduardo have just speared a zombie that was outside of Hilltop's protective wall. Kal informs Eduardo that he must retrieve the spear from the zombie because Sutton, the colony's blacksmith, is no longer making spearheads. During this conversation, Rick and the others arrive at Hilltop's entry gate.

Paul greets Rick and is shown Glenn's body. Paul takes the group inside to talk with Gregory, who asks if Negan is aware of the secret agreement between the Hilltop Colony and the Alexandria Safe-Zone. Rick is infuriated that Gregory would say such a thing in a time like this and punches Gregory in the face, angered that Gregory never informed Rick of the large size of Negan's army. Gregory and Paul are amazed to learn that Negan, himself, came out to deal with Rick personally since no one else has ever seen him and some people even doubt Negan's existence.

Paul accompanies Rick, Carl, Michonne, and Heath back to Alexandria. Before they leave, the group says goodbye to Maggie and Sophia. Rick reconciles with the former, promising to do what he can to make sure Negan pays for the death of Glenn.

When they arrive at the Alexandria Safe-Zone, they see that their neighborhood has been attacked and that about a dozen members of The Saviors were killed in the attack. There are numerous vehicles outside the compound which appear to have tried to smash through the Safe-Zone's defenses but failed. Unsure if any Saviors got past the walls, Rick tells Carl, Michonne, Paul, and Heath to stay in the van so he can assess the situation.

Nicholas appears at the gate and allows Rick inside of the Safe-Zone where Andrea and Olivia run to Rick. Andrea embraces Rick and states that no Alexandrian citizens were harmed in the attack, despite having killed almost a dozen Saviors.

Andrea then takes Rick into a house, where she shows Rick that they captured one of Negan's men, Dwight. Andrea then asks Rick what to do with him.

Dwight explains to Andrea and Rick that they are going to be killed when Negan gets to them. Andrea punches Dwight in the face, but Rick tells her to stop. He explained what The Saviors did to Glenn. Rick explains to Andrea that he vastly underestimated Negan's forces and that Glenn was his friend and a good person who didn't deserve to die the way he did. Rick shows signs of blaming himself for what happened and that Glenn and Maggie were his hope of a better future.

Paul is shown around the Alexandria Safe-Zone and given a house to stay in by Heath. Heath expresses liking the sense of community that the Hilltop Colony offers, which is more people and bigger walls. Jesus says he would trade the Hilltop Colony's trailers for the Alexandria Safe-Zone's setup any day. Jesus always says that he is here to help.

Carl expresses to Rick that they should kill Dwight to show Negan that Alexandria isn't to be "fucked with" and that he is angry over Glenn's death. Rick says he doesn't know what to do.

Michonne and Rick discuss a course of action regarding The Saviors. Rick thinks they shouldn't fight back, or at least not at the present time. Michonne says she has seen what they are up against and is fine by living without fighting and that feels like she is on the group's "leash" and could use a break from being the de-facto "killer". She agrees they should try a different path this time than what they pursued with Woodbury.

Eugene tells Rick that he and Abraham were looking for the items to manufacture ammo when he got killed. He tells Rick he can make bullets and wants to do his part by making the ammo which kills Negan's men. Rick admires Eugene's offer, but says that isn't what's going to happen.

A town meeting is called where Rick breaks the news of his compliance to Negan's demands and the release of Dwight, much to the disgust of Andrea. Rick explains to the town exactly what they are up against and how Negan saw killing Glenn as a game that meant nothing to him. Rick wishes to live in peace.

Alexandria releases Dwight, much to the anger and uneasiness of Andrea, Michonne, Carl, and Holly. As everyone disperses to return to their houses, Jesus approaches Rick, telling him they will get over it and understand eventually. Rick then tells him to pack up while everyone's distracted and hit the road to catch up with Dwight before his trail goes cold. Rick wants to know what they are up against, find out as much as they can about Negan and his people, and report back. No one in the Alexandria Safe-Zone or the Hilltop Colony can know what they are really up to.
