Owner Comments:

This official medal of the World’s Columbian Exposition is sharply struck in gold plated brass and has full cartwheel luster that shimmers even in low light. It is an example of the large letters, one pearl variety that Shevlin & Hyder catalog in their book “So-Called Dollars Volume 1: United States Expositions” as SH 6-1 GP with a rarity of R6 (21-75 known). This piece is a much rarer variety than the more common two pearl variety that Shevlin & Hyder catalog as SH 6-1.1 GP with a rarity of R2 (2001-5000 known). NGC has graded this medal MS-66. However, they make no distinction between the ‘one pearl’ and ‘two pearl’ varieties in their census, so there is no way to know how many of the other HK-154 examples that they have graded may be the rarer ‘one pearl’ variety.
