ACCENTED HAIR VARIETY.
PROOF 67 CAMEO.
NICE CLEAN AND SPOT FREE COIN.
THE ACCENTED HAIR VARIETY FOR 1964 IS NOTED FOR QULITY CONTROL ISSUES, MILK SPOTS BEING A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR THE ACCENTED HAIR COINS. THE MINT MUST HAVE BEEN IN A RUSH TO PRODUCE THE EALY STRIKES OF THE NEW KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR, JUDGING FROM THE QUALITY ISSUES FOUND IN THESE EARLIEST STRIKES. ANY ACCENTED HAIR KENNEDY THAT IS FREE OF MILK SPOTS IS VERY DESIREABLE AND SCARCE.
THE ACCENTED HAIR VARIETY IS OF COURSE A LOWER MINTAGE COIN, BUT PROBABLY NOT AS RARE AS IT IS SOMETIMES HYPED TO BE. THIS VARIETY IS VERY POPULAR WITH COLLECTORS AND HAS AN INTERESTING STORY BEHIND IT.
THE STORY BEHIND THIS COIN IS THAT WHEN MRS. KENNEDY WAS SHOWN THE EARLY VERSION OF THE HALF DOLLAR THAT HONORED HER LATE HUSBAND, SHE ALLEGEDLY OBJECTED TO SOME DESIGN DETAILS OF THE LATE PRESIDENTS HAIR. AS A RESULT, OR SO THE STORY GOES, PRODUCTION WAS HALTED AND SOME DESIGN FEATURES WERE MODIFIED. THE NGC EXPLORER WEBSITE SIMPLY SUGGESTS THAT THE ACCENTED HAIR DETAILS WERE ADDED TO CORRECT SOME MUSHY LOOKING DIE DETAILS. BUT NGC AGREES THAT THESE WERE OBVIOUSLY EARLY STRIKES OF THE 1964 ISSUE. SOME PEOPLE DATE THE ACCENTED HAIR VARIETY TO JANUARY, 1964.
HOW MANY COINS WILL YOU FIND IN THE COLLECTOR'S WORLD WHERE YOU MAY PINPOINT THE MONTH AND YEAR OF PRODUCTION? THAT PROBABLY HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE POPULARITY OF THIS VARIETY. NGC EXPLORER NOTES THE FACT THAT THIS VARIETY IS SCARCE IN CAMEO CONDITION.
