Owner Comments:
After General George Washington ordered the Continental Army’s retreat from Manhattan on November 16, 1776, the City of New York remained under the control of British forces for the remainder of the Revolutionary War. Seven years later, as the Revolutionary War was coming to an end, General Washington led the Continental Army south through Manhattan Island to the City of New York after the evacuation of British forces from the city at 12:00 noon on November 25, 1783. Washington and the Continental Army were greeted with a hero’s welcome as they marched down Broadway to the battery. The day became known as “Evacuation Day” and was celebrated annually for over a hundred years. This medal was struck in 1883 to commemorate the centennial of the Evacuation of New York City. It is made of white metal, has a diameter of 35mm and is holed as made for suspension. It is one of only three examples that have been graded by NGC, one at AU-50, this piece at MS-62 and one higher at MS-63. The overall rarity is R5 (76-200 known).
