Owner's Description
This example for EC's Crime SuspenStories #11 has been graded Near Mint 9.4 by CGC with supple, Off-White page quality. Outside of the Gaines File Copy examples, high grade ECs are very difficult to find and true Near Mint range examples are rare. The Overstreet Price Guide lists this issue in 9.2, lower than the condition offered for $875. This 9.4 is valued at well beyond the 9.2 Guide price.
Crime comics of the 1940s and '50s stood out for their wild action and brutal violence, but rarely for artistic merit. EC's Crime and Shock comics were certainly an exception with the groundbreaking stories and top flight artists for which the publisher is legendary. The violence was there as well, however, and the covers of Shock SuspenStories and Crime SuspenStories are some of the most outlandishly gruesome of the 50s. The strangulations, decapitations, and electrocutions seem all that more horrid portrayed with the style and realism of some of the greatest artists of the era. The stories inside are equally hardboiled. EC's writers often presented grim, updated versions of classic yarns rooted in the detective pulps and gangster films of the 1930s and '40s, but generally not with the happy endings. Certainly not for the faint of heart, some of these books would push boundaries even by today's jaded standards.
