Owner's Description
Tom Mix Western #9 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on pages 323-325.
With regards to western themed comic books, Wertham wrote an article for the National Parent-Teacher Magazine and stated that “It is a great error not to realize that ‘Western’ comics are just crime comics in disguise. The comic book Tom Mix, for example, has the story of an insane killer who hacks off people’s hands, with the bloody details fully illustrated.” On pages 323-325, Wertham goes on to state that his article prompted a threat of a libel suit from the publisher of the comic and the steps he took to provide the details from the Tom Mix story to support the statements he made in the Parent-Teacher piece.
The hand hacking story that Wertham references is entitled “Hands Off” and is contained in Tom Mix Western #9. It does indeed tell the story of killer that hacks off hands although it’s the hands of a dummy made to look like Tom Mix. I generally agree with Wertham that the story is crafted to convey that a real person’s hands were hacked off as opposed to a dummy’s hands. I’ve included a scan of the hand hacking scene so you can judge for yourself.
