Owner's Description

Atom #31 features a Hawkman appearance, who later joins Atom for a short run starting with Issue #41. This issue also features one of their most famous comic book covers by Gil Kane (pencils) and Murphy Anderson (ink)l in which Hawkman is shooting the Atom with his slingshot. This maneuver was used again many years later so we would have to think it is one of the duo's favorite moves. In Captain America: Civil War, Hawkeye did the same maneuver with Ant-man. The scene was one of the highlights of the film, but alert fans quickly recognized the move as a Hawkman-Atom trick.

The plot of “Good Man, Bad Man--Turnabout Thief!" Is honestly too convoluted to describe adequately here, but Atom and Hawkman join forces to arrive at a department store, which is being terrorized by a costumed villain known as Toyboy who uses his psychic powers to animate the toys in the department store. After fighting off Toyboy's attacks, the heroes manage to knock him out when Atom takes control of an animated toy plane and flies it directly at Toyboy, striking the crook in the head and knocking him out. After Atom revives from the rattling crash, the two heroes unmask Toyboy and are shocked to find that he is really Johnny Burns, a former crook captured by Hawkman who they thought had gone straight. The two heroes are then caught off guard when Toyboy revives once again.

Breaking free, Toyboy goes on a rampage again, this time exhibiting super-human strength. The two heroes manage to defeat Toyboy once more when Hawkman fires Atom out of a sling shot to deliver another blow to the head. Atom and Hawkman then discover that there are really two Johnny Burns and that some strange force struck him and separated him into two distinct versions of himself, one good and one bad. It’s actually more complicated than all that, but you get the gist.

Our copy of Issue #31 comes from the Rocky Mountain Collection. This pedigree was assigned to a large Marvel and DC Silver Age collection originally auctioned by Comiclink in 2008. The Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and X-men runs were first auctioned without pedigree, but due to high collector interest the decision was made by CGC to classify the collection as a pedigree. Subsequently those three runs were retroactively given the Rocky Mountain notation. Hailing from Colorado, the collection numbered around 5,000 books, initially stored in a basement in similar conditions to the Mile High collection. None of the books exhibit identifying marks, but are easily traceable back to Comiclink.

Our Rocky Mountain copy is tied with four others for highest graded. We acquired the book from the CL auction of 9/1/2018.
