Owner's Description

The cover of Issue #44 is rather unique featuring a ghost in a white hat and tux. The story itself is a continuation of the one started in Issue #43 as Hawkman's battle with the Gentleman Ghost continues, with Hawkman steadfast in his belief that Craddock isn't a real spirit. Meanwhile, the Ghost finds a blind psychic named Zita, who falls in love with him. She tells him that her sight can be restored by exposure to a rare jewel, and he promises to get it for her, announcing that he will steal the Empress Ra-Na's necklace from the Louvre. He does so, despite Hawkman and Hawkgirl's stakeout, although his men are captured. However, this jewel is ineffective, and he steals the Fire Ruby from a Paris fashion show, again from under the Winged Warriors' noses. He escapes into the sewer system, with all evidence confirming his ghostly status. Zita's sight is restored, but the Ghost leaves her, swearing not to return until his physical body can also be restored.

Our WP 9.8 comes from the Twin Cities Collection. Gary Dahlberg spent his life carefully buying, reading and storing comic books away throughout the '60s and '70s, with aspirations to become a cartoonist one day. Sadly, he died in a fire in 2010, but to the astonishment of his family his collection was appraised at more than $1 million by Heritage, who auctioned the books in 2011. Consisting of mainly Marvel and DC, this accumulation has no identifying marks but yielded some of the highest grades of the early Marvel period with considerably high page quality. The collection ultimately brought over $2.4 million at auction.

Our 9.8 is the single highest graded example in the census. We acquired the book from the 6/12/2019 CL Auction.
