Issue #52 features the first appearance of the Grim Reaper, Eric Williams. The Grim Reaper was created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. Williams is the brother of Simon Williams, alias Wonder Man. He is a supervillain and necromancer known under the codename Grim Reaper. In addition to being an adversary of the Avengers, he also becomes a member of the Maggia, Lethal Legion, and Legion of the Unliving at various points in his history.The character will be portrayed in live-action by Demetrius Grosse in the upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man in the MCU.
In the story, the Black Panther travels to the Avengers HQ, passes through the security systems and finds the Avengers dead. He is then arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jasper Sitwell. It is shown that the Avengers were attacked by the Grim Reaper, who is seeking revenge for his brother, Wonder Man’s, death. He puts the Avengers in a special type of coma, that only he can undo.
The Panther breaks free of the police and returns to the Avengers HQ to find the Reaper. They fight and the Black Panther steals the Reaper's coma weapon. He rushes to the hospital, battling policemen, and revives the Avengers. He is then cleared of any charges and joins the team.
While this is a very common book in 9.8, ours is the only 9.8 SS copy.
