Sometimes we make mistakes. I have made many, this book was one of mine. It is certainly a nice book and the single highest graded copy in existence. But it was not worth what I paid. I knew I was going to miss the particular auction this book was in because of a basketball game, so I just left a bid I thought would be well more than what was needed. But when I got back from the game, I was surprised to find that I had won the book at my max bid. Honestly, I did not even want the book at that price, it was my mistake in not anticipating the kind of interest this book drew. We acquired the book from the 1/16/2021 Heritage Auction.
2024 Update: OK, I am sure I should not say this, but the situation that I described above has now happened enough times to us for me to question whether I am always bidding against other buyers or whether the House is taking part. I have even mentioned that concern to them. All I can tell you is that I would not bid more than I am comfortable with spending prior to the auction, because you will likely either get the book at your max or lose it. But there are times where you simply cannot participate in an auction real time, what can one do? My advice is to use a friend who shares your interest in comics to bid on your behalf if you have one. And if that’s not possible, prepare to lose the book or overpay. If you leave a high bid and get it for less, color me surprised.
