Amazing Spider-Man #289 features Ned Leeds revealed as Hobgoblin + the 1st appearance of the new Hobgoblin (Jack O’Lantern)!
Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $40.
According to the CGC Census Report as of Tuesday, August 22, 2023, out of a total of 1,514 Universal copies graded, 311 copies were graded in 9.8 with ONLY 1 copy graded higher in 9.9!
With these statistics in mind, this represents a rarity factor of 20.54% of the total population.

Since the Hobgoblin’s 1st appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #238 in March of 1983, it was a mystery as to who was shrouded behind the medieval style costume and demonic looking mask! For a total of four years and three months, the Hobgoblin’s identity remained elusive as he terrorized Spider-Man on numerous occasions in his attempts to defeat him! However, in June of 1987, the mask was removed and the Hobgoblin’s identity was finally unveiled to the general public, as none other than Mr. Ned Leeds!
Artists Tom Morgan & Tom Palmer delivered a stunning front cover in which we see the Hobgoblin standing in the middle of a spotlight, with his mask gripped in his hand and his face concealed in a black shadow! With two guns pointed at him from the front and two armed men approaching from behind, the Hobgoblin is cornered with nowhere to hide!
The bright green background makes the cover pop nicely with the yellow Amazing Spider-Man title, the yellow text box and the yellow boots and gloves of the armed men. In contrast, the cover also coordinates beautiful orange hues as seen on the background of the Spider-Man logo, the outside border of the yellow text box, the Hobgoblin and the armed men’s suits and the large caption that reads: “THE HOBGOBLIN REVEALED!”
Moreover, actor Jacob Batalon played Ned Leeds in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). He will also be featured in the upcoming film Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Due to the fact that Ned Leeds has already been integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) within 3 consecutive Spider-Man films, it’s more than likely that we’ll see the Hobgoblin’s MCU debut in the near future! As a direct result, high-grade copies of ASM #289 have seen a steady increase in demand, which will only explode further in due time!
Although ASM #289 is not considered rare, as the combined total of Universal 9.6 and 9.8 copies equals almost half the entire population on the CGC Census, this particular 9.8 copy is exceptional because it is PERFECTLY WRAPPED and CENTERED and contains PERFECT WHITE PAGES!
In addition, the staples are perfectly inserted into the spine, the corners are razor sharp and the color saturation is deep and vibrant; as if the book was printed yesterday!
I won this pristine copy in Comic Link’s Focused Auction in January of 2021! I was ecstatic when I was notified as the winning bidder and I’m proud to showcase this immaculate copy in Arachnophobia!
