A 9.9 from the 60s, WOW!!!
Issue #191 features a Green Lantern appearance. Our 9.9 comes from the Newstand Mint Collection and is the single highest graded CGC copy besting a couple of 9.8s. This book is one of our very few success stories of transitioning a book from CBCS to CGC, as I acquired this book off a Heritage Auction as a CBCS 9.9 many years ago. There were absolutely no guarantees that it would retain such grade when they broke it out for grading, but since I don’t keep CBCS books in our collections, we gave it a shot. Personally, I am not a big fan of books graded higher than 9.8 and I sincerely hope they remain a rarity, but I must say it’s really a beautiful book. It’s also one of just two 9.9s in this set, the other being much later, and easily the earliest 9.9 we own-we only have about six in total.
If I can make one comment on Registry points here, this is one case where the assigned points have no relationship whatsoever to reality-or the marketplace. The registry assigns only a 20% bump from 9.8 to 9.9. IMHO, based on over 20 years of buying and selling at auction, this book would likely make at least 10 times the price of a 9.8. Even as a CBCS book, it was about 5 times as expensive as a CGC 9.8 I also own, which was at one time the single highest graded copy of this issue in the census. Admitedly, the issue will rarely arise, but the registry needs to give 9.9s a huge points boost.
