Owner's Description

Issue #23 features the birth of Aquababy, Arthur Jr. In the story, Aquaman learns from an Atlantean doctor that Mera, who is about to deliver his child, will be doomed by a hereditary disease that runs in Aquaman's family (as will the baby), if she does not receive an antidote made from an anemone root in the Gulf of Terrors, far from Atlantis. Along with Aquila, Aquaman completes a perilous odyssey to the gulf and get the antidote from an exiled criminal of Atlantis, Sinquo. Mera receives the antidote in time and safely bears their son, Arthur Curry, Jr., alias "Aquababy". However, Aquababy has been given strange powers by the serum, which threaten Atlantis. Aquaman opines that Sinquo added something to the serum that gave his son the out-of-control powers. The Atlanteans demand that Aquababy be taken away from the city, and Aquaman, Mera, Aqualad, and Aquababy all go into exile. But when the mutant Horrkas attack the family, Aquababy blasts them away, exhausing his powers in the process, allowing Aquaman and his family to return to Atlantis.

Our 9.8 copy of Issue #23 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, our 14th such book in this set, and is the single highest graded example with just one 9.6 in the census. The Pacific Coast Collection is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on E-Bay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.

We acquired the book from a friend and fellow collector in May 2023.*
