When you see these covers showing mountain terrain and Germans you are seeing the Italian or southern front, which Churchill described as "the weak underbelly" The Italian army was not as disciplined but when they received German help they were formidable and there were many vicious battles in Italy and lots of mountains. This cover shows a fully loaded G.I. scaling up and his rope has just been severed by an enemy bullet, ( it appears to be Germans, I don't believe any DC war comics ever showed the Italian army) very doubtful that the man below is pinioned in so they are both going to fall backwards, hopefully not too far.
