Synopsis: The space shuttle carrying the X-Men back to Earth crash-lands at Jamaica Bay, near John F. Kennedy International Airport. The X-Men and Peter Corbeau emerge safe and sound – all except for Jean Grey, who piloted the starship back to Earth through a solar storm. Suddenly, a fierce Jean flies out of the ocean, inexplicably donning a new costume and referring to herself as “Phoenix,” before passing out. She is immediately taken to the hospital. A few days later, her condition improves, although it remains uncertain, prompting Professor X to force the X-Men to take a leave of absence. He and Cyclops will remain at the hospital and take care of Jean, while the rest of the team is to go away on a short holiday. The X-Men travel to Ireland, where they are to stay at Banshee’s family keep. There, they are received by the castle’s steward, Eamon O’ Donnell. Unbeknownst to them, Banshee’s evil cousin, Black Tom Cassidy, plans to murder them. In the evening, the X-Men gather for dinner, but end up falling through a trapdoor into the basement, where they are greeted by Black Tom and his accomplice – Juggernaut. Their confinement inside the narrow space triggers Storm’s claustrophobia and she lashes out with a blood-curdling scream.

Story Notes:
First appearance of Phoenix II aka the Phoenix Force. The mystery of the Phoenix will be explained in Classic X-Men #8 and Excalibur (1st series) #52. For more information on the extremely convoluted Phoenix storyline, read Phoenix’s Character Spotlight.
The true Jean Grey will not be seen again for a decade, until she reappears at the bottom of the ocean in Avengers (1st series) #263 (1986).

This is the first time that Wolverine is seen expressing romantic feelings for Jean. His attraction for Jean was retroactively established in Classic X-Men #1.

According to Marvel Chronology Project, between page 6 (the X-Men leaving the wreckage site) and page 7 (Wolverine visiting the hospital) there is a gap of several days, during which time the X-Men and Phoenix make the following chronological appearances: pp. 7-9 of Classic X-Men #9 (Phoenix is admitted to the hospital), Marvel Team-Up Annual #1 (apparently released from the hospital, Phoenix accompanies the X-Men to an adventure), Marvel Team-Up (1st series) #53, Marvel Tales (1st series) #262 and the backstory in Classic X-Men #9. Continuity is a bit iffy: the only explanation for Phoenix’s chronological appearances in between p. 6 and 7 of the present issue is that after she was released from the hospital she relapsed off-panel and was admitted to the hospital for a second time.
The Daily Bugle headline “JFK Mystery Deepens” in page 7 probably refers to a hoax by the villain Jester who distributed false newscasts claiming John F. Kennedy was still alive. [Daredevil (1st series) #129-135].
