Owner's Description

Featuring a cool Stilt-Man cover, this 9.8 features WP too. Strangely enough, according to the census, as of 5/2020 there are no blue label 9.8s of this issue. There are, however, two Signature Series examples. We acquired the book from the 9/29/2011 Pedigree Comics Auction.

2024 Update: Strangely enough, there are still no blue label 9.8s of this one. However, there was one, the Twin Cities copy, in Doug Schmell’s collection, which was auctioned off by Heritage back in 2012. So the mystery is whether that book is now the other signature copy or whether that book just disappeared from the census? I’ll admit, I don’t care enough to search every registry set to see if I can find it, but I do always wonder what happened to books in the census that disappear and how many more books listed there now may no longer exist? I know I have benefitted a few times where books that I bought, which did not top the census alone at that time, now do. I have also had books downgraded when I submitted them to CGC for a new holder. And I guess if a book is submitted to CBCS that it comes out of the CGC census, at least if CGC has the evidence. But hard to understand why anyone would submit a CGC 9.8 to CHCS. The most logical explanation is that the owner took it out and had it signed by Stan Lee, but I am not sure I would have taken that chance wit a book already graded 9.8. Sounds like a Hardy Boys Mystery, the case of the disappearing CGC 9.8.

Nevermind, mystery solved, my friend Matt Holly has the book in his registry set and he indeed did take it out to have it signed by Stan Lee. So much for the book sales…..Upon examination, I do prefer our copy, but would have been pleased with either. His is a little lighter and shows slightly more wear, but it is a pedigree and at least the placement of Stan’s signature is not objectionable. Even there, I slightly prefer this book as the signature is a little smaller. I saw a signed 9.8 of TTA #45 in the last Heritage Auction that I would not own, as Stan blocked out the dialogue box with a black sharpie. It was a shame, I wanted to upgrade my 9.6 copy, but I passed on that one. Generally speaking, I am neutral on signatures on comics, but a big fan of them on first edition books, especially if they are signed to any person and are lined and dated. I think generally speaking, that Stan’s with the silver sharpie near the bottom of the book are his best.

I do know that different collectors’ have very different opinions on signed comics. While my friend Matt obviously prefers them, my friend Mike Pope pretty much considers them to be a disqualifying defect. Again, I am pretty indifferent as long as the placement does not ruin the cover. Of course, the registry accords signed books a 10% point premium, I’m not sure the marketplace agrees.
