Set Description:

Synopsis: We currently own 49 of the 52 books in this set, with a minimum grade of 9.6 (44 9.8s and 5 9.6s).

Background: Thor Odinson was created by artist Jack Kirby, writer Stan Lee, and scripter Larry Lieber, the character first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 (August 1962).Thor is based on the Norse mythological god of the same name. He is the Asgardian God of Thunder, whose enchanted hammer Mjolnir enables him to fly and manipulate weather, among his other superhuman attributes. Thor is a founding member of the superhero team the Avengers.

Chris Hemsworth portrays the character in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films: Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Doctor Strange (2016, cameo), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).

Our Collection: This set is a continuation of JIM #83-125, with the only difference being the drop of the JIM title, as Thor appeared in every issue from #83 on and it remained a collaboration of Lee and Kirby through Issue #177. We initially stopped collecting Thor at JIM Issue #125. I’m not honestly sure why we did not target these later books from 1966-1970 when we started back collecting, but in the last 3-4 years, in our effort to collect new books rather than shelling out so much for upgrades, we started picking a few up when the price was right.

The census on these books looks entirely different from that of the earlier JIMs, as there are generally multiple 9.8s topping the census with respect to every issue. Thus, when we started collecting these books, which was long after we completed our JIM #83-125 set, our goal was just to buy 9.8s. And at first they were readily available at somewhat reasonable prices. But in the last year or two, the prices for 9.8s have soared to such ridiculous levels that some issues with 5-6 books topping the census are going for more than $25,000 apiece, or roughly 10 times what similarly graded books were going for just a year ago. As a consequence, we have started buying WP 9.6s, which still look great, but are much much more affordable.

Finishing this set is one of our collecting goals, so If you have one of the books we are missing in 9.6 or better, we would love to hear from you.
