.
Series No.1 ENGLISH TEXT (1949 - 1966)
Total (specialist basic set) ...46 Banknotes
The first series of notes designed and issued by the Central Bank in 1949 is known as the English Text series, featuring
14 notes whose design was much like the pre-war U.S. issues.
On December 31st, 1957, the five denominations below 1 peso and three above 50 pesos were withdrawn from circulation, the smaller notes were replaced by coins, and only notes up to 50 pesos were continued to be printed up until 1961. All notes remained legal tender up until July 30th, 1964, being demonetized on July 30th, 1967.
The English Text series was the first series of Philippine notes to use an asterisk instead of a star, to denote a replacement note, only 5, 10 and 20 centavo notes continued using stars for early issues, changing to an asterisk for later releases.
