Owner's Description

Left over notes from the 1985 Series G 1000 Cordobas issue (P145b) were used to overprint these 500,000 cordobas notes in 1987. The central bank authorised 3,150,000 of these notes to be overprinted and were placed into circulation on the 14th of February 1988. From what I have seen these were predominantly from the higher serial numbers 160* millions.


For the 1985 Series G the 1000 Cordobas banknotes they were authorised under two different Central Bank resolutions the first on the 30th of April 1985 and another one of the 30th of December 1985. There is no break down for each denomination just a global amount across all denominations with a total face value is listed in the Flores book. The amounts are 300 million banknotes with a face value of 272.5 billion cordobas and then it was amended to have a total of 550 billion in face value. After checking the serial numbers and running some calculations I believe that there was approximately 170 million of these 1000 Cordobas banknotes printed.

They have continued the design from the previous 1984 Series F banknotes. There are two types of banknotes the first banknotes such as this one that has Engraved ink (p145a) and there is also the lithographed ink variety (p145b). I am unsure about how many were done in each format possibly half in each format.
The banknotes pay homage to revolutionary leader Augusto César Sandino, the rebellious guerrilla leader that fought against the United States involvement and military presence in Nicaragua. He was later executed at the hands of the national guard under orders of General Anastasio Somoza who would later become president and dictator of Nicaragua.

The Sandinistas later adpoted his name for their political party and his famous wide brimmed hat and portrait are widely used in their political propaganda and was also featured on the reverse of the coins issued during the 1980s whilst the Sandinistas were in power.

On the reverse of the banknote is Sandino's modest childhood home.
