Owner's Description

The new Cordoba Oro dated 1990 and introduced into circulation in 1991, was made up of banknotes from different printers. The 1/2, 5, 20 & 50 Cordobas Banknotes were all produced by the Canadian Banknote Company.

There is three different varieties this being the first. I believe that these banknotes actually started with serial number A50000000 which would make this a low serial number variety. And I estimate there was about 55/60 million produced in total. The details that are available from the Flores book shows that the initial Central Bank Resolution is for 1 million 50 Cordoba notes. But clearly much more were printed in further resolutions. There is a second sigunature variety that I have seen with serial numbers as high as A93 million. And there is a 3rd vareity which is 177B that has a B prefix and only has 2 signatures instead of the three.


Just like almost all the previous 50 Cordoba banknotes dating back to 1929 and continued through to the current releases purple is the dominant colour. The only note that wasn't purple was the 1985 (1988) issue which was featured red tones. Pedro Joaquin Chamorro's portrait is featured on the obverse of the banknote. Chamorro is featured on the 50 Cordobas banknotes from this issue in 1990 through to 2006.

Pedro Joaquin Chamorro was the editor of La Prensa (The Press) Newspaper in Nicaragua he was an outspoken critic of the Somoza dictatorship and was gunned down by unknown gunmen in his car in January 1978. Following his assassination there was riots and strikes throughout the capital of Managua and around the country. His widow Violeta Barrios de Chamorro later became president of Nicaragua in 1990.

The reverse shows a scene depicting the end of an era for the revolutionary Sandinsta Government. With the Right hand side showing supporters pulling down the state of Somoza on horseback when they rose to power on the 19th of July 1979, whilst the Left hand side shows their defeat at the polling booths on the 25th of February 1990.
