Owner's Description

Are $10 bills from New Orleans the source of the word "Dixie"? They just may be. An enduring bit of American folklore, even perhaps fact, is that river boat men that came down the Mississippi in the 1830's and 1840's saw $10 notes of the Citizen's Bank of New Orleans, imprint in both French and English. Prominent was "DIX" on the reverse which is French for the number 10. At least two other banks in the city issued bilingual notes with the "DIX" imprint. Apparently, less aware river dwellers did not know the finer details of French pronunciation so when they migrated South into the Who Dat metropolis, they claimed they were going to work to collect "Dixies."
