It is only appropriate that I have a GEM note for the two most common $10 and $20 gold certificates. I finally got this Siesta Collection note to upgrade my Fr. 1173 for the third time!

This Fr-1178R is a completely unique note. It was recently identified, by the inimitable ddr70, that this is a pre-star replacement note. The font is from paging machines that predated rotary printing. However, instead of using rotary machine for replacements, the BEP would rely on older paging machines. The switch from paging machines to rotary printing occurred at ~ serial number 11,700,000 as published by Shawn Hewitt and Peter Huntoon. Rotary machines did not have the "droopy two," the "hunchback three" and long-handle four that is obvious on this note and of course the serial number greater than 11,700,000 on this note proves it is a replacement. If it had that famous little star on the note, it would be really valuable. Without the star, it's kind of like just another note. Bummer.

This note was bought ungraded at a Lyn Knight auction in late 2017. I am always hesitant to buy ungraded because the probabaility of getting a NET note is high. The auction house described as "Almost Uncirculated" When I received the note, it had a few more crinkles and a very tiny area that might be construed as a problem area thus the possibility of NET. However, it came back PMG 53. Lyn Knight's assessment was dead on. And the $881.25 auction price was not too high nor was it a screaming bargain, so all in all, a good upgrade choice for the Fr. 1185. 28 notes out of 214 total graded are higher thus this note so this note is in the top 15% of 1185's graded. As always, i carefully scrutinize the reverse of $20 GC's for outstanding color. This 1185 meets my standards. Beautiful flaming orange reverse.

Finding a Fr-1197 with beautiful orange colors on the reverse is incredibly rare thus commands a high price. PMG shows 123 notes in their population report. Only 18 have a higher grade. I have seen a couple of 30PPQ's up to 40 that has nice coloring. However, most of these notes low grade, the back is faded orange, sometimes with sufficient soiling to make the reverse lose all it's eye appeal. In my gold certificate collection (won Best Presented Set in 2017) the eye appeal of the reverse is the major factor. I paid up for this note because I wanted the gorgeous reverse that I felt the price was fair enough to stand the test of time. With exception of my Fr-1181 reverse, this is one of the most beautiful notes in my GC collection.

I find it interesting that Fr-1200, the common Speelman-White 1922 $50 Gold Certificate has 648 graded by PMG (as of 6/1/2018) whereas the Fr-1198 Parker/Burke signature combo from 1913 has only 26 graded. Only 6 notes have graded higher than this note. In addition this note is comment free with excellent colors. The Fr-1198 is 25 times less common than the Fr-1200 but the price differences don't reflect that? I believe those that collect the more rare versions of the notes that have the same design will be rewarded one day.

There are precious few AU and/or EPQ Grant large note $50's. According the the population reports, PMG has graded a total of 648 Fr-1200's. This is one of two notes that graded 53EPQ. 41 notes have graded higher. Out of those 41 notes, 16 have graded EPQ. Thus this note is in the 6th percentile highest only 2.4% have graded higher with EPQ. Fr-1200's in near uncirculated condition graded as EPQ are quite rare.
Fr-1200, the common Speelman-White 1922 $50 Gold Certificate has 648 graded by PMG (as of 6/1/2018) Update: (as of 12/6/2019) PMG has graded 676. That is an increase in the population of 28 notes in a year and a half. Thus the population of PMG Fr-1200's has increased by over 4% in a very short time.

Large score for note that is average quality. The reverse is the unique orange especially for Gold Certificates. I contend these will always hold value as the supply is squirreled away in collections while the demand is steadily increasing.

From a recent Heritage auction describing the 1225a...The incredibly rare "a" series of the Fr. 1225. Heritage describes a VF note in recent auction...A rare number for this unredeemable design as the Chambliss-Hessler reference reports only six. Also, the Friedberg reference does not value Fr. 1225a in any grade and simply states, "rare," not a surprising conclusion for a Friedberg number with a total print run of only 36,000 pieces. This example, with serial number E28328, is unlike the other two we have offered in recent years in several respects. Both of the previously offered specimens were heavily punch canceled, and each was quite stained as well. This example has no staining, and PMG's only comment is "canceled." The note was originally made payable to the Northwestern National Bank of Chicago and dated September 26, 1905. It was evidently held by the bank for quite some time, as the redemption stamps on the back are those of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, which of course was not established until 1914. Each of the other Fr. 1225a notes sold recently realized between $7,500 and $8,400, and this far superior example will almost certainly exceed that number.
