New Bloomfield, PA First NB of Ch. # 5133 PMG 53 $5 1882 DB Fr. Lyons | Roberts SN 1/B801196 pp E/32 dtd. July 12, 1898. Position indicator and 1882-1908 printed in selvage. A quick glance at the National Currency Foundation census reveals immediately how rare this serial number 1 1882 Date Back is. Only 33 serial number 1 1882 Date Backs have been reported in total from over 8,000 surviving serial number 1 examples from all banks in all states. Compare that with the rarity of Serial Number 1 Red Seals, which total 88 survivors from Pennsylvania alone! This particular issue from the "E" plate position which also retains its top selvedge has perfectly preserved signatures and received just a light fold and handling which accounts for the grade. Bank officers were James T. Alter Cashier and Jas. W. Shull, President. The bold blue overprint and the deeply printed black ink remain unmolested to this day.

Lewistown, PA The Mifflin County NB Ch. # 1579 $10 Brown Back Fr. 482 Rosecrans | Jordan PMG 25 SN 2232 / D974220 pp B/8 dtd. Apr. 23d, 1885. Beautiful, dark penned signatures in black ink of D. (David) E. Robeson, Cashier and And. (Andrew) Reed, President. A well-margined and very colorful $10 Brown Back from this Lewistown bank that is one of only two examples of this type and denomination in the census. It has a vertical charter number, indicating it was one of the earlier Brown Back notes to be issued. Heritage lists the other $10 BB as SN 2982 pp B in VG/F.

York, PA The Western NB Ch. # (E)2303 $10 1882 DB Fr. 542 PMG 30 SN 393/B516843 pp C/25 July 23, 1895 Radar. Nice signatures of E.A Rice, Cashier and John Fahs, President. The Western NB didn't order 3x10-20 sheets until after 1908, so this $10DB has a C plate letter; $5s and 50-100s for BBs! This plate received a distinctive baroque font for spelling National Bank first used around the beginning of 1894. This font features pointed flairs in the letters--it's known as a Group 11 on series of 1882 $5 BBs. The note has a hidden star from BEP Die 2988 which began use April 16, 1900.

Lewistown, PA Citizens NB of Ch. # (E)5289 PMG 25 $10 1882 VB Fr. 577 SN 6197/U958335 pp E/146 dtd. Feb. 27, 1900. The Citizens is a scarce bank--this is only the second $10 Value Back to be reported. Evenly circulated and problem free with nice color and margins. Ten Dollars and National Bank are reminiscent of Walcutt's Gp 16 plate note of Towanda, PA (also the Citizens NB). The A in Dollars has the diagonal crossbar and the E in Ten matches the E in Five. Letters for NB have spikes on top and bottom surfaces, but for Lewistown it is layed out in a curve, not flat, with larger letters, but the dangling balls off the T are gone. Signatures have faded away.

This is one of only six large examples from this one-bank location. Sharply printed and nicely pen-signed by C.A. (Charles) Peck, Cashier and Nellie T. Peck, President. Chartered in 1900, the FNB of Mexico, NY ordered only sheets of 3x$10-$20 for BB, DB, VB and Series 1902 PBs. Look for a ladder Bank SN of 2345.

Dayton, OH The Winters NB Ch. # (M)2604 PMG 25 $100 1882 DB Fr. 571 SN 996/A94487 pp B/7 dtd. Dec. 15, 1901. All 1882 $100 nationals are scarce and this appealing mid-grade offering is a new addition to the census. Just a single other 1882 $100 date back was known prior to the appearance of this piece and high denominations overall are scarce for this Montgomery County charter.
