New Bloomfield, PA First NB of Ch. # 5133 PMG 53 $5 1882 DB Fr. Lyons | Roberts SN 1/B801196 pp E/32 dtd. July 12, 1898. Position indicator and 1882-1908 printed in selvage. A quick glance at the National Currency Foundation census reveals immediately how rare this serial number 1 1882 Date Back is. Only 33 serial number 1 1882 Date Backs have been reported in total from over 8,000 surviving serial number 1 examples from all banks in all states. Compare that with the rarity of Serial Number 1 Red Seals, which total 88 survivors from Pennsylvania alone! This particular issue from the "E" plate position which also retains its top selvedge has perfectly preserved signatures and received just a light fold and handling which accounts for the grade. Bank officers were James T. Alter Cashier and Jas. W. Shull, President. The bold blue overprint and the deeply printed black ink remain unmolested to this day.

Pfahler signed on this SN 1 Red Seal that also happens to be a pre-star replacement note. The only serial number 1 Red Seal reported from this Columbia County bank. This lightly circulated note features nice embossing and beautiful penned signatures. C.S.W. Fox was cashier (1905-1922) while C.J. Fisher was president (1905-1935). N.P. The area around Catawissa was originally owned by William Henry in 1769. Catawissa was laid out in 1787 and at the time was referred to as "Hughesburg" or "Catawissey". The First National Bank (4548) was chartered in 1891 and the Catawissa NB charted in 1904 in time to issue this $5 Red Seal.

Keene, NH The Citizens NB Ch. # 2299 Blocky Script Plate Dates and Postal Locations (only on earliest BEP Plates--8 other charters for 3x10-20); White paper with two continuous horizontal threads PMG 20 minor repairs $10 1875 Fr. 416 SN 2689/K296098 pp A Sept. 25th, 1875. Cashier H. (Herbert) B. Viall and President O. (Obed) G. Dort. The Citizens National Bank of Keene was incorporated on September 18, 1875, and began business on October 1 of the same year opening to the public on November 1. The capital was $100,000. Stephen D. Osborne was the founding president, and Obed G. Dort was the first cashier. In some listings the bank title was in the possessive, as Citizens', but most omitted the apostrophe. The bank did well, and in various audits all was found to be financially sound. On August 11, 1924, A.M. Avery, acting chief of the Organization Division of the Treasury Department, sent this memo to the chief of the Examining Division: "The Ashuelot National Bank of Keene (946) and the Citizens National Bank of Keene (2299), Keene, New Hampshire, contemplate consolidating under the act of November 7, 1918, under the charter of the Ashuelot National Bank of Keene, and under the title of the Ashuelot-Citizens National Bank of Keene. Please advise if there are any assets of either association which should not be taken into the consolidated bank." On September 6, 1924, the aforementioned consolidation took place, the Ashuelot-Citizens National Bank became the title, and the Citizens National Bank of Keene was no more.

St. Louis, MO The NB of Commerce in St. Louis. Ch. # (M)4178 Replacement PMG 64EPQ $10 1882 BB Fr. 484 Rosecrans | Huston SN 50953/A128228 pp R/2 dtd. Dec. 14, 1889.
The National Bank of Commerce in St. Louis was one of the most prolific note issuing banks of the National Currency era, issuing more than $112 million in currency from the time of its chartering in December of 1889 through 1935. The $10 Brown Back offered here is certainly not a statistical rarity though it is a wonderful representation of this visually striking design type. Broad margins and bold machine printed signatures are featured on this beautifully printed Ten from the Gateway City. Stacks didn't describe as a Replacement note, but it is in the census--it is from 4x$10 plates reintroduced as an option in 1906 by the BEP. From the Tarzan Collection.

Hotopp and Cashier Horace Hays. This Hardin County institution changed its name in 1911, when the First National Bank of Elizabethtown was liquidated and this bank assumed its circulation.
