Lebanon, PA The Valley NB Charter #655 $5 Series of 1875 Fr. 401. PMG 25 SN 1140/K551880 pp B dtd. Dec. 30th, 1864. A very scarce item from this seldom offered large only Lebanon bank as this is the only Series of 1875 $5 reported from here. It is an attractive mid grade note with bold ink colors and dark signatures of Jac. (Jacob B.) Karch, Cashier and George Hoffman, President. This large size only bank chartered December 30, 1864 and was liquidated December 1, 1920, ~56 years later. The paper features two continuous horizontal threads the use of which is consistent with production in 1880 as indicated by the treasury SN. The Continental BN Co. is found in the lower border as the BEP didn't replace with their imprint until about 1887 for any new or replacement plates.

New Bloomfield, PA First NB of Ch. # 5133 PMG 53 $5 1882 DB Fr. Lyons | Roberts SN 1/B801196 pp E/32 dtd. July 12, 1898. Position indicator and 1882-1908 printed in selvage. A quick glance at the National Currency Foundation census reveals immediately how rare this serial number 1 1882 Date Back is. Only 33 serial number 1 1882 Date Backs have been reported in total from over 8,000 surviving serial number 1 examples from all banks in all states. Compare that with the rarity of Serial Number 1 Red Seals, which total 88 survivors from Pennsylvania alone! This particular issue from the "E" plate position which also retains its top selvedge has perfectly preserved signatures and received just a light fold and handling which accounts for the grade. Bank officers were James T. Alter Cashier and Jas. W. Shull, President. The bold blue overprint and the deeply printed black ink remain unmolested to this day.

Catawissa, PA The Catawissa NB Ch. # (E)7448 $5 1902 RS Fr. 587R PMG 53 SN 1/B144561 pp D/16 dtd. Apr. 30, 1904. Assistant Cashier Nelle P. Vastine and Vice President C. P. Pfahler signed on this SN 1 Red Seal that also happens to be a pre-star replacement note. The only serial number 1 Red Seal reported from this Columbia County bank. This lightly circulated note features nice embossing and beautiful penned signatures. C.S.W. Fox was cashier (1905-1922) while C.J. Fisher was president (1905-1935). N.P. Vastine briefly appears as cashier in the CoC report for 1923. W.M. Vastine was cashier at Catawissa's FNB.
The area around Catawissa was originally owned by William Henry in 1769. Catawissa was laid out in 1787 and at the time was referred to as "Hughesburg" or "Catawissey". The town is on the southeast side of the North Branch of the Susquehanna River about 5 miles south of Bloomsburg. The Catawissa Deposit Bank was incorporated in 1871. The First National Bank (4548) was chartered in 1891 and the Catawissa NB charted in 1904 in time to issue this $5 Red Seal.
