Owner's Description

1973 saw British Honduras renamed Belize and the Board of Commissioners of Currency continued to issue banknotes until 1976 when the interim Monetary Authority of Belize took over. The denominations issued by The Government of Belize were retained with the addition of a $100 note (P38 to P42). All notes are dated 1st June 1980 and feature a common design, like the preceding issues the denominations are only differentiated by the colour. The $5 notes are red and the example for this set is P39a which shows that, in addition to the Coat of Arms and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, items of local interest are now incorporated into the design. On the front of the notes the jade head of the Mayan Sun God Kinich Ahau features at the top right highlighting the extensive history of the region. A large school of fish and a solitary Angel fish represent the natural wealth of the coral reefs off the coast. The central vignette on the back is the National Assembly Building in Belmopan surrounded by examples of local fauna – a green iguana and a Jabiru Stork (The Monetary Authority logo). The Central Bank of Belize was then founded in January 1982 completing the transition to independent control of the currency and remains the sole issuer of banknotes for the country.
