NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE

The Series C 10 Shilling note was the last 10 Shilling note issued by the Bank of England, as Shillings were rendered obsolete by the United Kingdom's transition to a decimal-based currency system in 1971. This banknote was replaced by a (decimal) 50 Pence coin.

This was the first and only Bank of England 10 Shilling note to feature a portrait of the reigning monarch.


SIGN OF THE TIME

This note features the signature of Leslie K. O’Brien.

O’Brien was the 22nd Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, serving from January 17, 1955 to February 28, 1962. He later became the first person to serve as both Chief Cashier and Governor of the Bank of England when he was appointed to the Bank’s top post in 1966.

Rowland Baring was Governor of the Bank of England when this note was issued. He was the Bank’s 114th Governor, serving from July 1, 1961 to June 30, 1966.
