This was the first Bank of England note to feature a portrait of the reigning monarch.


SIGN OF THE TIME

This note features the signature of Leslie K. O’Brien.

O’Brien was the 22nd Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, serving from January 17, 1955 to February 28, 1962. He later became the first person to serve as both Chief Cashier and Governor of the Bank of England when he was appointed to the Bank’s top post in 1966.

Cameron Cobbold was Governor of the Bank of England when this note was issued. He was the Bank’s 113th Governor, serving from March 1, 1949 to June 30, 1961.
