NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE

This was the first Bank of England banknote to feature the signature of a woman, as Chief Cashier Merlyn Lowther was the first woman to serve in this role since the Bank was established in 1694.


SIGN OF THE TIME

This note features the signature of Merlyn Lowther.

Lowther was the 29th Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, serving from January 1, 1999 to December 31, 2003. She was the first woman to hold this position in the more than 300-year history of the Bank.
