NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE

This was the first Bank of England banknote to have the serial numbers printed on the back of the note.

The Series F Third Historical £20 note was the last paper £20 note issued by the Bank of England.


SIGN OF THE TIME

This note features the signature of Andrew Bailey.

Bailey was the 30th Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, serving from January 1, 2004 to April 1, 2011. He is only the second person to serve both as Chief Cashier and Governor of the Bank of England. Bailey was appointed to the Bank’s top post in 2020, and still serves as Governor today.

Mervyn King was Governor of the Bank of England when this note was issued. He was the Bank’s 119th Governor, serving from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2013.
