NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE

The motto “In God We Trust” was added to the back of United States Currency mid-way through the printing of this series. The "no motto" notes of this series were the last $1 notes printed without “In God We Trust”.


SIGNS OF THE TIME

This series features a Smith/Dillon signature combination.

Elizabeth Rudel Smith was the 31st Treasurer of the United States, serving from January 30, 1961 to April 13, 1962. She was appointed by President John F. Kennedy.

George M. Humphrey was the 55th Secretary of the Treasury, serving from January 21, 1953 to July 29, 1957. He was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
