Owner's Description

Since I was born in the mid-1980s, this is the design they were using when I was growing up as a child. So this is the design I saw when I got a $5 bill from my grandmother for my birthday or as part of a Christmas present - She always gave us $25, usually as a $20 and a $5 bill.

The 1993 series bills and later have microprinting and plastic security strips in the bills. These were the first modern anti-counterfeiting / counterfeit detection features added to the bills but these changes didn't do much to change the look of the bill. At first glance the changes were less impactful than the change from silver certificates to FRNs and removing the "I promise to pay on demand in silver" language, which happened decades earlier, well before my time.
