Owner's Description

This 2003 note was to show what the US $5 note looked like after the initial re-design occurred in the early 1990s but before they started adding colors and some of the other more advanced security features to the bill.

I remember when they announced that they were going to start changing the look of the money and thought it was crazy. My family joked at the time that it was going to start looking like "Monopoly money."

This note design was introduced in 2000 to combat counterfeiting. This was the first complete redesign of the bill since the introduction of small size currency in 1929. Yeah, there were smaller changes during that time - getting rid of gold and silver redemption among others - but that old design was in use for a staggering 71 years. This design, by contrast, was only in use for about 7 years.
