Owner's Description
This 2006 note was picked up to show the look / design of the $5 bill after it was colorized in the middle of the first decade of the new millennium.
If I remember right, the announcement that they were going to start adding colors and other advanced security features to the money made me think it was both cool and silly. The money was REALLY going to start looking like "monopoly money" now, right? And the "greenback" wouldn't be all green anymore. It just seemed crazy.
Now? Overall I like the design but I think these newer note designs suffer from being half-measures. They're still trying to look like the old notes / old money and keep the green color and a lot of the old overall design and layout while trying to look more modern. As a result, they look like they still have a foot stuck in the past and don't visually compete well with what you see coming out of the rest of the world - some of which is quite beautiful.
This design was announced in 2006 but printed starting in 2007 and released to circulation in 2008.
