A complete set of 1733 Colonial Maryland 1st Resolution Series Notes consisted of seven (7) denominations ranging from 1 shilling to 20 shillings cataloged by Friedberg as MD-1 thru MD-7. These Notes are among the more sought-after Maryland colonial types, valued for both their rarity and their direct connection to pre-independence America.

Set Description:
The 1733 Colonial Maryland 1st Resolution Series Notes consisted of seven (7) denominations ranging from 1 shilling to 20 shillings cataloged by Friedberg as MD-1 thru MD-7. These Notes are among the more sought-after Maryland colonial types, valued for both their rarity and their direct connection to pre-independence America. Issued under Colonial Maryland’s early paper money system, the 1733 Series Notes are tangible artifacts from a formative period in American economic history. Colonial currency was produced to support local trade and public expenses, and surviving examples are far scarcer than later federal issues. Counterfeits of MD-6 and MD-7 are known to have been made during their circulating period.
While working on family genealogy I came across a 1962 ANA article by Richard T. Hoober about the “Financial History of Colonial Maryland.” Additionally, there was the March 2023 ANA article about the colonial printer Jonas Green and his family of printers. These two articles inspired me to start working on Colonial Maryland currency. My wife and son gave me a copy of Eric P. Newman’s book on “The Early Paper Money of America” which has been a wonderful resource. Starting out knowing little about currency, it has been an interesting and enjoyable journey. Along the way I have connected with an outstanding dealer Logan Track of “COLONIAL CURRENCY Hub” who has been very generous with his time and knowledge. For this I am truly thankful!
On March 13, 1733 the Maryland Colonial Assembly authorized £90,000 in indented legal tender Notes for the creation of a Loan Office which was to operate until September 29, 1764. The plates were printed in England and the Notes were printed on fine laid paper watermarked MARYLAND. The design of the Notes are simple but elegant, with a sharp image of the Maryland Seal, fine script printing and unique engraved Counterfoils for each denomination of Notes. Five (5) Notes of the same denomination were printed on one sheet, with the Notes beings distinguished by one to five stars placed after the denomination (I.S. VI.D*****) for (1Shilling, 6 Pence) in the lower left corner and having blank backs. A large Counterfoil and ornate tab/sub are located on the left margin of the Notes.

This MD-3 AU-55 (2 Shilling, 6 Pence) Note is a nice surviving example with the complete Counterfoil included. The specimen makes for a nice and acceptable addition to my specialized 1733 Resolution Series Set. The Maryland Colonial General Assembly authorized 40,000 of this denomination. MD-6 PMG UNC-61: March 13, 1733 This MD-6 UNC-61 (15 Shilling) Note is an excellent surviving example with the Counterfoil included. A small amount of the right side of the Note has been cut off, but it does not diminish the Notes over all eye appeal. The specimen makes for an outstanding addition to my specialized 1733 Resolution Series Set. The Maryland Colonial General Assembly authorized 30,000 of this denomination. The MARYLAND water mark has been confirmed on this specimen so to verify that it is not a counterfeit. MD-7 PMG AU-53 EPQ: March 13, 1733 This MD-7 AU-53 EPQ (20 Shillings) Note is an excellent surviving example which is exceptionally rare that includes an artful Counterfoil. This Note is an outstanding addition to my specialized 1733 Resolution Series Set. The Maryland Colonial General Assembly authorized 30,000 of this denomination. The MARYLAND water mark has been confirmed on this specimen so to verify that it is not a counterfeit. As of the time of this writing, PMG has graded only one (1) MD-7 specimen and total of six (6) other graded specimens are known to exist in various legacy PCGS holders.
