Extremely bold and dark penned signatures of H.A. Smith (Smith's signature, if it is indeed his, consists of a whirl of penmanship that gratefully survives to date), Cashier and Jno. E. Searles, President (who served in this position from only 1896-1898 and possessed a beautifully legible signature). This bank issued Brown Backs only during its 16 year run. Liquidated 31 Jan. 1903. Kelly lists just 13 survivors. One of the three institutions chartered in New York City to adopt a geographical title such as "western." All speedily failed, leaving the one obvious choice, "Eastern," unused. 8044844-001 $5 1882 Brown Back National Bank NotesUnited StatesF 12
