Set Description:
Vanuatu, founded in 1980, was formerly known as New Hebrides. The first Vanuatu paper money began circulating in 1982 and replaced the New Hebrides francs and Australian dollars then in circulation. Vanuatu paper money is denominated in the Vatu. (One US dollar equals approximately 111 Vatu.)
All Vanuatu notes share a central vignette of the Vanuatu Coat of Arms portraying a Melanesian warrior holding a spear superimposed on a boar’s tusk. Underneath is a scroll with the national motto, “Long God Yumi Stanap” which translates as “With God we Stand.” The Coat of Arms is always found at center-right on the notes’ face. The note backs show various scenes of island life. All notes prior to 2010 were printed on standard banknote paper. From 2010 to present, Vanuatu notes were polymer. The switch to polymer allowed for the inclusion of anti-counterfeiting devices as well as increasing the lifespan of the notes.
All notes are available in CU condition and none are overly expensive.
