Owner's Description

Three months after the Cargill bearer cheques were introduced, primarily as payment instruments for cotton farmers, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe issued its own set of bearer cheques.

The 2003 bearer check series was a series of emergency currency notes of the first dollar which were issued starting on 15 Sept 2003 which were in circulation until the withdrawal of the first dollar on 21 August 2006. The backs of these 2003 issues are mostly blank except for some patterning which is probably there as an anti-counterfeiting feature. There’s a space that seems like it should have an image there, as with the earlier 1st dollar issues, but it’s just empty. The $50 000 and $100 000 denominations, depicting Victoria Falls on reverse, were introduced on 1 October 2005. Following the redenomination of August 2006, bearer checks that were originally scheduled to expire on 31 December 2006 were demonetized early.

Bearer checks dated 15 September 2003 bear the signature of the Acting Governor Charles Chikaura. The remainder of the series bear the signature of Dr. Gideon Gono, who was appointed governor in November 2003.

ZIM22a and ZIM22b have the signature of the acting governor. The 22a has a Serial Number pre-fix E where the ZIM22b has prefixes F-G (this note is an F). The ZIM22c and ZIM22d have Dr. Gono’s signature. The ZIM22d has Dr Gono’s name printed / typed next to the facsimile signature where prior issues had not done this. I suppose I’m not the only one that can’t read any of these signatures – and I generally can’t.
