NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE

This note was part of the first-ever print run (star note or otherwise) produced at the BEP's Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, TX, which came online during the printing of Series 1988A notes.

As Treasurer of the United States, Catalina Vásquez Villalpando’s signature appears on the notes of this series. She served the last four months of her term as Treasurer on administrative leave, as she was the subject of a criminal probe. Villalpando was later convicted of tax evasion, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to make false statements regarding her finances, giving her the dubious distinction of being the only U.S. Treasurer sent to prison.

SIGNS OF THE TIME

This series features a Villalpando/Brady signature combination.

Catalina Vásquez Villalpando was the 39th Treasurer of the United States, serving from December 11, 1989 to January 20, 1993. She was appointed by President George H.W. Bush.

Nicholas F. Brady was the 68th Secretary of the Treasury, serving from September 15, 1988 to January 17, 1993. He was appointed by President Ronald Reagan and continued into the administration of President George H.W. Bush.

MEANWHILE, AT THE FED...

Alan Greenspan was Chairman of the Federal Reserve when this note was printed. Initially appointed by President Ronald Reagan, he worked under four presidents and served from August 11, 1987 to January 31, 2006. Greenspan served a record five terms as Fed Chairman, and his tenure was the second-longest when measured by time served in the role.
