NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE

This was the last large size $1 Legal Tender note issued.

The 1923 series marked the end of the large size currency era in the United States. In 1928, all U.S. banknotes were redesigned and reduced to the smaller, modern size still used today.


SIGNS OF THE TIME

This note features a Speelman/White signature combination.

Harley V. Speelman was the 16th Register of the Treasury, serving from January 25, 1922 to September 30, 1927. He was appointed by President Warren G. Harding and served into the administration of President Calvin Coolidge.

Frank White was the 25th Treasurer of the United States, serving from May 2, 1921 to May 1, 1928. He was appointed by President Warren G. Harding and served into the administration of President Calvin Coolidge.

Andrew W. Mellon was Secretary of the Treasury when this note was issued. He was the 49th Treasury Secretary, serving from March 4, 1921 to February 12, 1932. He was appointed by President Warren G. Harding and continued into the administrations of Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover.
