Owner's Description

The 2001 50 Cordobas notes was very short lived. It is an all new design for the 50 Cordobas but it takes its design style from the previous 1999 series D 100 Cordobas banknotes including the security thread. This particularly note was given a new Series A designation, but was quickly replaced by a whole new issue in 2002 also bearing the Series A.

I am unsure on how many banknotes were produced or circulated but this was a very limited release and these banknotes are particularly hard to find in UNC.

Just like almost all the previous 50 Cordoba banknotes dating back to 1929 and continued through to the current releases purple is the dominant colour. The only note that wasn't purple was the 1985 (1988) issue which was featured red tones. Pedro Joaquin Chamorro's portrait is featured on the obverse of the banknote the third time Chamorro is featured on the 50 Cordobas banknote following on from the 1990 and 1995 issues. And just like the previous Series A-D banknotes that are similar in design it also has the National Coat Of Arms are on the reverse.

Pedro Joaquin Chamorro was the editor of La Prensa (The Press) Newspaper in Nicaragua he was an outspoken critic of the Somoza dictatorship and was gunned down by unknown gunmen in his car in January 1978. Following his assassination there was riots and strikes throughout the capital of Managua and around the country. His widow Violeta Barrios de Chamorro later became president of Nicaragua in 1990.
