The tolar was the currency of Slovenia from October 1991 until the introduction of the euro in January 2007. The definitive tolar banknotes—which were issued starting in late 1992—were brightly colored and famous for celebrating prominent historical figures in Slovenian arts, science, and politics.
The obverse depicts Janez Vajkard Valvasor, who was a natural historian and polymath from Ljubljana, and a fellow of the Royal Society in London.
His best-known work—the Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, published in 15 books in four volumes—was the main source for older Slovenian history, making him one of the precursors of modern Slovenian historiography.
