The tolar was the currency of Slovenia from October 1991 until the introduction of the euro in January 2007. The definitive tolar banknotes—which were issued starting in late 1992—were brightly colored and famous for celebrating prominent historical figures in Slovenian arts, science, and politics.
The obverse depicts France Prešeren, a Slovene poet whose works are widely considered some of the most important in Slovene literature. He has been considered the greatest Slovene classical poet and has inspired later Slovene literature.
The reverse displays some the text of Zdravljica (“The Toast”) by Prešeren, a patriotic poem centered on friendship, unity, and freedom among nations. One stanza from this work would later become the national anthem of Slovenia, permanently securing Prešeren’s place in the country’s cultural history.
