The tolar was the currency of Slovenia from October 1991 until the introduction of the euro in January 2007. The definitive tolar banknotes—which were issued starting in late 1992—were brightly colored and famous for celebrating prominent historical figures in Slovenian arts, science, and politics.
The obverse depicts Ivan Cankar, a Slovenian writer, playwright, essayist, poet, and political activist. Celebrated as the greatest writer in the Slovene language, he is the founder of modernism in Slovenian literature.
The reverse displays an engraved chrysanthemum, in homage to "Bela krizantema" (White Chrysanthemum), a prominent polemical essay and literary manifesto written by Cankar. The reverse also contains snippets of Cankar’s original handwriting, reinforcing the intimate bond between the writer, his words, and his legacy.
