Owner's Description

Date: 20 Mar 2018
Source: Zhao Yong
Variant: This is the variant without the "Ren" hidden mark from later prefixes
Comment: This is the - colloquially translated - "Green-back No Watermark" 1 Jiao note that PMG catalogued as P877a. It is one of the more sought-after China 3rd Series banknotes, and actually comes in two variants that PMG does not differentiate (i.e., they both fall under P877a). The earlier issuance has an additional hidden mark - a Chinese character "ren", roughly translated to human - on the obverse that later issuance does not have. I'll say that the early issuance with additional hidden mark is slightly more desirable. Overall, I place this note (i.e., either variant) third on the most coveted list for China 3rd series banknotes, behind its watermarked counterpart (P877b), and the first note of the 3rd series, the "date-red" 1 Jiao note (P873, not included in this set). For a longer discourse on the history and aesthetics of this note, you can go to my blog entry.
