Owner's Description

Sugar was introduced to Nicaragua in the 16th century, but the production was mainly for the local market. In 1892 the first sugar factory, San Antonio, was installed. Exports grew, but they suffered during the US recession of the 1930s. In 1948, a second sugar factory, Monte Rosa was opened. This was followed by a third factory in 1960, Dolores (now Benjamín Zeledón), and a fourth, Montelimar, in 1969. Later three other factories were opened, but they disappeared in the 1990s when international sugar prices dropped, and also because the Nicaraguan government at that time was unwilling to hand these factories over to the workers.
