Owner's Description

The limited edition commemorative issue 1000 Cordobas banknote was released into circulation on the 1st of December 2016.

This marks the return of the 1000 Cordoba banknote after a 30 year absence in Nicaragua after the inflationary 1980s when the Old Cordoba was replaced with the New Cordoba Oro in 1990 with a lower exchange rate. There was a 500 and 1000 Cordoba banknote produced for the 1990s set however this was never released to the public and only two known examples were issued officially. These were released to reduce the amount of banknotes required for larger transactions, as the Cordoba Oro had devalued considerably from when it was initially introduced in the early 1990s. 1000 Cordobas in US Dollar value in 2016 was roughly U$35.

This banknote is celebrating 100 years of the death of legendary Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario (He is described on the banknote as the prince of the Spanish letters). It is also the first time Ruben Dario has featured on a 1000 Cordoba banknote, having previously featured on multiple issues from 1945 through to 1985 on the 500 Cordobas banknotes and from 1990 - 2006 on the 100 Cordobas banknotes.

The banknote is paper based and it is to complement the 2015 release of mainly polymer banknotes (only the 500 Cordobas is also paper), its dimensions are 161 x 67 mm being slightly larger (5mm) than the 500 Cordobas banknote.

On both the obverse and reverse is quotes from his poetry in Spanish.
